Event Description

Toto Funds the Arts presents Innocence, a play written and directed by Anmol Vellani. The play is a black comedy based on Franz Kafka’s novel The Trial and set in India. The play is supported by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore, which will also host the opening run of three shows between the 10th and 12th of May 2024.

Innocence tells the story of a man accused of committing a crime, although he is never told about the nature of his offense. He refuses to plead guilty, despite being told by everyone he meets that it is his best option in the circumstances. His long struggle to protect his reputation and integrity, however, leads to dead ends and drives him to despair. He becomes suspicious of everything and everyone and is reduced to a sorry figure of a man — exhausted, impassive and alone. K's innocence does not help him to escape from the inexplicable acts of higher authorities, but neither is the state able to find a shred of evidence to establish his guilt. The play has a powerful message: We, the people, in any society, are diminished if we are deaf to a blameless man’s cry for justice.

The leading characters in Innocence are played by Ashish D’abreo and Sanjna Banerjee, supported by Srinivas Beesetty, Manu Varkey, Rohit Dave and Arvind Dev.
